Open Arms Mission is very fortunate
to be able to provide food assistance for our "neighbors in need." The mission's
food inventory is based on daily essentials such as milk, bread, cereal, meats,
pastas, soups, vegetables, fruits. Clients may visit once per week and receive
enough food for about six (6) meals per person. Open Arms Mission is one of the
largest food pantries in Lake County and we are the only pantry in the area that
provides fresh milk for the children.
However,
at Open Arms Mission, it’s not just about serving food ... we serve people. We
treat each individual with respect and dignity. Our intake counselors help to
ensure that all clients know they are special by talking with them one-to-one
through our intake process. Unique among other food assistance programs is that
we have a client referral program through our many collaborative relationships
with local professional service agencies, including family counseling, financial
and credit counseling, and job training and placement services. Each of our
clients is provided with useful information about community services and
referrals based on their individual needs.
We also are one of six sites nationwide to be recognized and approved for
participation in Food Stamp Express, a
national pilot program through the Illinois Department of Human Services and the
Northern Illinois Food Bank. Listed below are the current income levels to
qualify for food stamps in our area per the Illinois Department of Human
Services. Most of our clients qualify for this program.
