Through conversations with
local School Social Workers a need was
identified for weekend nutritional meal items
for at risk children. The schools ensure
children have nutritional meals through
subsidized lunches, we wanted to do the same for
the weekend. In January 2008 we piloted the Back
Pack Program by partnering with Northern
Illinois Food Bank, Grass Lake School and
Northbridge Church. These combined efforts
ensure 40 children go home each weekend with 3
kid friendly meals, 3 breakfast and healthy
snacks. Northern Illinois Food Bank supplied the
necessary back packs and Open Arms Mission along
with Northbridge Church volunteers do the
shopping and assembly each week for children
identified through their Social Workers and
Teachers. Here is an example of the success
stated by a thankful Mom.
“I
want to tell you how much I appreciate the back
pack program. Being a single disabled Mom of
four children, it helps tremendously. I plan
what they eat over the weekend around the snack
bag. Also because I don’t receive that much in
food stamps it also helps making sure the kids
have something to eat. I love the back pack
program and would like to thank everyone that
has a part in making it possible. You truly
touch and make a difference in people’s
lives. Thank You."
Your
donations can help us in our efforts to meet the
nutritional obligations we have made to the
children. Open Arms Mission has been able to
purchase reduced priced items to provide a
weekend back pack full of food at a low monthly
cost. You can help by sponsoring a child for
$15.00 or the program for $600.00 a month. As
you read in the letter, the need is real. Our
goal is to add a second school for the 2009-2010
school year. In order to ensure the success of
two schools, we need a financial commitment from
an individual, church or organization.
As a community, let’s be there for our children.
